Ponnanganni / Alternanthera sessilis is a perennial herb which is used as a medicine in Ayrurveda due to its enormous health benefits. There are two types of this greens. The green, elongated leafy ones are called “Naattu Ponnanganni” and the one with pink and oval leaves are called “Seemai Ponnanganni”. In Tamil, the green is called so beacuse regular consumption of this improves skin health and gives gold like shine “Ponn aam Kanni”

This green is called super food because of the rich amounts of beta carotene and Calcium. Regular consumption of this greens will cure all eye related problems and arthritis. It also aids in weight gain in children. Am sharing a simple Thogayal recipe which is easy to make and can be relished with hot rice and ghee.

Ghee is a must when you saute the ingredients, to harness the full medicinal benefits of this green. This can be mixed with hot rice and a dollop of ghee or this can be taken with curd rice.
