Nadar Mess Chutney

Hello dear all 🙂 I am sharing today a family favourite recipe which I learnt through my Grandmother and this recipe is popular at home especially for Idlies. My early childhood days were at a small town called Thiruvonam in Pattukottai District where my Dad was working. We used to stay in the Govt Quarters allotted for my Dad. Idly, Dosa and all were rare at homes and made occasionally only . But for us kids (myself and my three brothers) my dad or my grandma used to get hot hot idlies from a nearby Nadar Mess which was very famous in that small town. Palaniappa Nadar was his name and his mess was called after his name. More than the softy soft idlies, we kids love that too thin coconut chutney (supposed to be watery) that he used to give generously in a steel bucket (we still have that small bucket at home 😉 ) in which we used to dunk idlies and devour.

By God’s grace our standard of life improved, and idlies became a home made food soon and almost on a daily basis. We kids demand the Palaniappa Nadar Mess chutney at home along with my mom’s signature tiffin sambar which I will share here soon. My grandma being a great cook and had her own small mess during her early life, learnt this chutney from the Nadar himself and makes this for us. The tadka is a special touch by my grandma which adds to the taste. This recipe was a part of my OPOS cookbook on Lip-smacking Chutneys which got multiple validations and soon became popular among many households. Happy to share this family signature recipe here in my space and thanks to grandma for yet another treasured recipe.

This goes well with Idlies and Dosas. Another hack by grandma is that she used to grind this with just a tbsp of water as a thogayal and that is heaven with hot steamed rice with a dollop of ghee or gingelly oil, even with rasam rice or curd rice, and yes, variety rice like tamarind and lemon rice too.

Do try this recipe and share your feedback 🙂
