Iluppai poo Samba Rice is a heirloom rice variety of Tamilnadu which is delicious, mildly fragrant, rejuvenating, small-grained, still rarely grown, with healing properties. This rice variety is very soft to eat and extremely easy on our gut. The reason for the name is that the from the fragrance of the iluppai poo (Mahua flowers) that spreads through the field when the paddy flowers and we get that fragrance while we cook the rice too.
Porridge / Rice Gruel made with Iluppai Poo Samba is great for people who are paralysed, effective in treating joint pains and swollen joints and reduces phlegm in children. It is known to be an immune booster and helps to clear skin problems.
This particular recipe of Kanji I learnt from my Father in law where I have replaced regular rice with Iluppai poo Samba and instead Moong Dhall I have used whole green moong.


I ensure to include this porridge at least once in week into our diet. You don’t need any accompaniments as we have the mango and shallot bits added. If you prefer you can serve it with any healthy Thogayal.
